The engine cuts out.

Silence fills the lane.

As Becky instinctively tries to restart, she first has to wrestle the gear selector back out of drive. It resists her, awkward and uncooperative, struggling to fight it back into park before she can even try again.

“Come on... please... you can’t do this to me...”

She turns the key.

The engine fires.

She gives it a few gentle revs, her nylon-covered foot working carefully, trying to keep it alive — but the moment she eases off, it cuts out again.

Silence.

“Please... please... please... please start for me...”

She tries again.

Crank.

Start.

Rev.

Stall.

Again.

Crank.

Start.

Rev.

Stall.

Her foot moves constantly now, pressing, easing, trying to hold that perfect balance — but the engine refuses to cooperate.

Every time she lifts, even slightly...

It stalls.

The pattern repeats over and over for several minutes.

Each attempt gives her a flicker of hope...

only to fall straight back into silence.

Her composure starts to slip. The frustration builds with every failed attempt as she keeps working the pedal, trying anything to keep the engine alive.

She’s c*mpletely alone out here.

No traffic.

No people.

Nothing but open farmland stretching in every direction.

Still she keeps trying — again and again — her movements becoming more urgent, more determined... but nothing changes.

The engine will fire...

but it refuses to stay running.

Eventually, realising she’s getting nowhere, Becky reaches for her phone to c*ll Jane again.

No signal.

No service.

Nothing.

Now she’s truly stuck.

With no one to c*ll, Becky has no choice but to keep fighting the car on her own — trying to remember what Jane told her earlier.

She adjusts the ch*ke between attempts, her nylon-covered foot working the pedal as she cranks again.

Crank.

Start.

Splutter.

Stall.

The tension is obvious now.

What started as frustration is turning into anger.

“Just... f*cking start... you POS...”

She tries again — harder this time.

Crank.

Start.

Rev.

Stall.

You can see it getting to her.

Her movements sharper. Less controlled.

The reality starts to sink in — she cannot get this car to run.

She’s not just annoyed anymore... she’s upset.

Genuinely struggling, stuck out here with no help, no signal, and a car that simply won’t respond no matter what she does.

But she has no choice.

She keeps going.

Over and over.

Cranking.

Spluttering.

Pleading.

Stalling.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Then — finally — something changes.

More than luck... judgement.

With the ch*ke fully out and the engine right on the edge, she catches it just right as it fires.

She holds it there... carefully... subtly working the ch*ke, easing it in and out, keeping the revs steady with her foot.

For a moment it feels like it might drop again...

But it doesn’t.

The engine steadies.

Holds.

And then — properly — runs.

Becky keeps it there, focused, making small adjustments, not daring to let it slip.

And finally...

After everything...

She has it.

The car is running the way she needs it to.

Her ordeal is over.
