Today my l*ttle sl*ve is sad and crying. Someone made him angry, but he won’t tell me who. I know, though, what he needs: to come into my arms and be cuddled.

I pick him up, rock him, and hold him tight. “Poor l*ttle one,” I tell him, “you’ll see—with a l*ttle cuddling, things will get better and better.” I let him try different positions: in my arms, on my shoulders, facing me. He relaxes, calms down, and stops crying.

He asks me to hold him again, and again. “Don’t you ever get tired?” I ask him. But in the end, it’s me who has to stop: “I’m starting to get a l*ttle tired.” I take him away with me, after telling him he mustn’t cry anymore.

A moment of rare intimacy, where my strength serves to protect and comfort rather than to humiliate. But remember: I’m always the one in command.
