I was not in the mood for a polished riding lesson today. I wanted something colder, rougher and far more amusing: a freestyle winter ride on my human pony.

I step outside into the freezing yard, nicely wrapped in my warm winter coat, jeans, leather gloves and Timberland boots, while my pony is waiting where it belongs; barely dressed, locked away, uselessly cold and already out of water. Poor thing. Of course, I could have filled its bowl first. But why w*ste the beginning of my amusement on his comfort?

So I climb onto his back right there and make him carry me out of the stall, across the yard and onto the frozen pond area. No saddle, no bridle, no ceremony. Just my weight on his back, my crop in my hand, and my decision that he will be useful today whether he likes it or not.

I ride him in different positions, even side-saddle, enjoy a cigarette on his back and make him work through the cold while I laugh at his pathetic l*ttle noises. When I want him on his back, he goes on his back. When I want my boots on his face, his face becomes the place for my boots. When I find icy water, I decide that this is where he may drink. He should be grateful I found him a water source at all.

There is riding, trampling, boot worship, spitting, face stepping, dirty soles, frozen ground, winter humiliation and plenty of my usual impatience when the pony starts whining instead of functioning.

By the end, I have used him for riding, amusement, warmth, balance, boot cleaning and entertainment; and then I send him back where he came from. Locked away again, while I go inside to warm myself up.
