I am talking to the camera as if it is the interviewer sitting across from me in a lifeguard job interview. The interviewer has just explained that part of the hiring test for lifeguard, to prove I can stay underwater long enough to rescue someone, requires me to hold my breath for an undisclosed length of time. I won’t know when it ends until the interviewer gives me the signal to breathe. I am super competitive, really wants the job, and promises I will push myself to the absolute limit to impress. I say things like I’m ready, I can hold my breath longer than anyone you’ve interviewed, just give me the signal whenever you’re ready and I’ll prove it. Then I take a huge, deep, full-lung breath, really fill my lungs c*mpletely, chest and belly expanding visibly, even a slight arch of the back to show how big the inhale is, and begin holding.
I hold as long as I physically can each round, trying to beat my previous time and impress the interviewer. Long holds where the desperation builds gradually, first confident, then the urge to breathe kicks in hard. The contractions, my bare stomach visibly tries to make me to breathe. I fights with max effort, but the contractions get stronger and more frequent toward the end. Natural grunting, whimpering, and muffled noises but I immediately clamp my mouth shut and keeps holding.
I start with calm, arrogant confidence then shift to panic and struggle as the need for air becomes desperate. I interact constantly with the interviewer, gestures with my hands pointing to my mouth and throat, holding up fingers to guess how much time is left, mouthing words like Still easy! at first, then It’s getting really hard, I need air so bad, Please, the signal. Toward the very end of each long hold I full on beg silently or with tiny desperate sounds, eyes pleading directly into the lens, leaning forward, thumbs-up to show I am still fighting, but clearly at my absolute limit. I am waiting for permission from the interviewer behind the camera, refusing to breathe until the exact signal is given even when my body is convulsing and I am visibly panicking.
I trie a few different breath holds this way, each one longer and more intense than the last, really pushing for personal best times to land the job. Whenever the signal finally comes and I explode into a huge gasping breath, I immediately apologize while still panting: I’m so sorry, I couldn’t take it anymore but I’ll do better next round, I swear. Just tell me how long you need and I’ll hold even longer for you. I stay super competitive and eager, promising I can hold as long as you want I’ll prove I’m the best candidate, just don’t give the signal until I’ve shown you everything I’ve got.
Each breath hold is longer than 2 minutes.
