Ah, mornings. I don’t need an alarm clock – my body wakes me up, demanding nicotine after a whole night of deprivation. My starving lungs crave a thick coating of tar to stifle my smoker’s cough and feel normal again. I’m no morning person, so never get between me and my cigarettes – not at any hour, actually.

I’m wearing pretty white lingerie you’re going to love, and a white shirt fully unbuttoned, and of course an all-white cigarette – white looks so good against my dark skin, doesn’t it? I’m in the kitchen because I need also caffeine to go with my nicotine – so many beautiful addictions begging to be fed! But where is my lighter? I search for it but then remember, with relief, that the stove is right there. I flick the burner to life and use the bl*e flame to spark my cigarette to life at last, momentarily quieting my screaming lungs.

The morning sunlight seeps in through the kitchen window, giving my hair a golden halo, illuminating every seductive curve of my tiny body and showing my smoke so beautifully you will think you are here with me, enjoying it secondhand.

My throat this morning is irritated from the yesterday’s nonstop smoking marathon. Perhaps you thought I was going to wait a moment before lighting up – but when you are a heavy smoker, there is no waiting. There is only this cigarette, now, and the next cigarette, soon, and the next, and the next. This morning, I do make one concession to cool my rough, sore throat: I smoke a menthol.
