Script: The Inquiry

Intro - 5 mins

Meeting room, with a stars and stripes flag on the wall. Three congresswomen are seated on one side of a large table with folders/notes in front of them. Representative JACKIE BARNAM is sitting in the middle, with Representative SELINA ROYCE sitting to her left and Representative MARIANA SOTO sitting to her right. They talk among themselves about preparing for the witness. Dialogue can be ad-libbed along the lines of ‘he's a tricky operator', ‘we need to nail him on his answers', ‘did you SEE the reports about his smutty parlour, disgusting', ‘when we're done, he'll have no business left', etc.

After a minute or so, we hear a knock at the door.

REP BARNAM: Come in.

DR enters. He carries a small, thin flashlight, unnoticed by the congresswomen.

REP BARNAM: (welcoming tone) Make yourself comfortable Dr

He sits in front of the three congresswomen.

REP BARNAM: I'm State Representative Barnam, and the Chair of this bipartisan panel. My colleagues are (she indicates) Representatives Soto and Royce. Thank you for attending this evidence session Dr

DR It's good to be here. I'm sure we can clear up this misunderstanding swiftly.

REP BARNAM: (tone changes to stern) We'll be the judge of that. Let me explain exactly why you are here. You know the focus of this congressional inquiry; we are investigating the unexplained explosion in pornography and lewd behaviour in this state . Tens, if not hundreds of women in your area have decided to pose for nude pictures, perform in sordid videos or simply cavort naked in the street . These are often individuals with no prior history of exhibitionism or lewd behaviour. And your name keeps coming up.

DR Well I don't

REP ROYCE: (cuts him off) There is no justification for immorality. As the elected representative for my district, I have a mandate to stamp out perversion wherever I find it.

DR MASTER: If I could just-

REP SOTO: (cuts him off again) I may not agree with my colleagues on many things, but on this we are united. Pornography and exhibitionism is sick and wrong.

DR tarts to speak, then thinks better of it.

REP BARNAM: So Dr it's time for you to come clean. The incidents are centered around your lab. Are you behind this rampant explosion in lewd behaviour ? You are under oath, so will be prosecuted if you lie to us.

DR Look, I'm just a cognitive scientist ...

REP ROYCE: Bullshit Dr You're up to something, and we're going to take you down .

DR This is outrageous! Since I came in, you've done nothing but silence me. And why can't we hold this session in public? When your colleagues hauled me up here ago, I got to make my case in the main chamber!

REP BARNAM: Dr we are holding this session in private so we can avoid a repeat of your previous public grandstanding. There will be no cameras and no press.

REP SOTO: It's just you and us, and it's our agenda. If we are to be this state's guardians of morality, so be it!

DR Well, I don't know what to say other than I'm innocent. I simply run a science lab, specialising in psychological and cognitive research.

REP BARNAM: So you deny that you're behind this heinous behaviour ?!

DR No, no, I mean it as a positive, affirming statement. (the congresswoman can't believe what they're hearing) My research has established that all women have the ability to be sl*ts for men. DR peaks slowly and deliberately, as if what he is saying is profound) My argument is simple: all women should become sl*ts for men, because...all women secretly want to be sl*ts...isn't that right?

He presses the button on his flashlight. We see a small light appear on REP BARNAM'S midriff, and she noticeably relaxes. She's not dazed or robotic, she just suddenly agrees with him, and is as confident in her statements as before.

REP BARNAM: (thoughtfully) Yes...yes of course you're right. I never thought of it that way before. As all women secretly want to be sl*ts, they should be sl*ts.

Both the other congresswomen do a double-take.

REP SOTO: What? Representative Barnam, have you gone insane?!

REP BARNAM: Come on, you heard what I did. Our politics are far too polarised, and why? Because people refuse to change their views even though the truth is staring them in the face. When confronted with compelling new evidence - as Dr has presented - I change my opinion.

REP ROYCE: But...Jackie, you've fought against smut for years. And he didn't give us any evidence!

He presses the button on his flashlight again and shines the light on REP BARNAM'S front. She reacts briefly and then speaks.

He presses the button on his flashlight and shines the light on REP SOTO's front.

He presses the button on his flashlight and shines the light on REP ROYCE's front.

REP BARNAM: Excellent. Motion carried. Colleagues, let's set an example for the American people.

She stands and starts taking her clothes off. The other congresswomen follow suit. REP BARNAM leaves on only her heels and open crotch pantyhose. REPS SOTO and ROYCE leave on their heels plus hold-up stockings. They briefly admire each others' bodies before sitting.
