Kim Chi is a lovely and bright y*ung lady, but sometimes, her behavior is less than responsible. She is quite smart, and there is absolutely no reason why she shouldn't get all As in school. And as long as she puts in the effort, she does always gets As in school.

But sometimes, Kim doesn't put in the effort. That's why when she gets a B on any test or paper, she gets grounded: it's both a disincentive, and it allows her time to catch up on her school. Two birds yada yada.

If she ever gets a C, however, then she has to be spanked. She is far too intelligent to be getting any Cs, and such laziness is unacceptable. So, of course, when the test she arrogantly didn't study for includes new material she hadn't yet mastered, she winds up with a C on the test.
