Becky’s about to head to work when her boss calls: she needs to check out a burial site right away. Her car’s not available, so she’s borrowing her friend Jane’s old Ford Fiesta. The car has been sitting for days and is c*mpletely cold.

She walks through the housing estate to the rear car park where the Fiesta is parked, gets in, adjusts the seat, puts the key in the ignition and turns it.

The starter just cranks over slowly - long, flat whirring with no sign of catching. Becky pumps the accelerator pedal gently and steadily, thinking that might help. Nothing. The engine keeps turning over but refuses to fire.

After a few minutes of this, she decides to c*ll Jane for advice.

Jane answers and explains the basics Becky wasn’t told: “You need the ch*ke - there’s a bl*ck knob under the dash on the right. Pull it out to start with. And pump the pedal a bit before you crank, but don’t overdo it or you’ll flood it.”

Becky holds the phone to her ear with her shoulder, reaches for the ch*ke knob and pulls it out partway. She turns the key again while slowly pumping the accelerator.

The engine cranks... cranks... a couple of faint pops... then it catches roughly and runs for a second before immediately stalling out.

She tries again: more ch*ke pulled out, careful pumping, cranking. It fires up lumpily, revs high at first, then drops and stalls again.

This happens several times - starts, runs unevenly for a few seconds, stalls. Becky stays patient, keeps her foot moving slowly on the pedal to try to keep it alive each time it stumbles, but it keeps dropping out.

Jane stays on the line, guiding her: “Pull the ch*ke out further... now try easing it back in a l*ttle once it’s running... feather the g*s, don’t let the revs drop too low.”

Becky keeps adjusting - ch*ke coming out more and more with each attempt - cranking, pumping gently, listening for that right mixture. Finally, after one more long crank, it fires up properly: rough idle at first, but it holds. She eases the ch*ke back in stages as the revs settle, and this time the engine stays running instead of stalling out.

Becky lets out a small relieved breath, shifts into gear, and gets ready to drive to the burial site.
