Jane crosses the train station car park in the fading afternoon light, heels clicking softly against the tarmac as she heads toward her Ford Fiesta. She’s parked it right at the far end, as always tucked away, out of sight. Experience has taught her that privacy matters when the car decides to misbehave.

The Fiesta has been sitting there all day, left out in the freezing cold since the morning. Jane knows what that can mean. She’s dressed sharply against the chill: a dark padded coat worn open over a crisp white blouse, a fitted bl*ck-and-grey checked skirt, thick tights, and sleek pointed stiletto boots that lengthen every step. One hand grips her bag loosely as she approaches, her expression already cautious, already braced.

Inside the car, the door closes with a dull thud. Jane pauses then notices it. The wipers. The fan. Still on from her earlier drive to the station. Her jaw tightens slightly. On a day like this, it matters. Each breath she exhales blooms faintly in the cold air as she settles into the seat and focuses.

She primes the engine carefully. A few deliberate pumps. Then the key.

The Fiesta almost catches. Almost. Close enough to spark a flicker of hope. Jane tries again, repeating the same slow, controlled rhythm, pump, pause, turn. The engine teases her, threatening to run, and twice it does, briefly, before dy*ng the instant she dares to introduce throttle. Each failure cuts a l*ttle deeper.

At first, she remains composed. Calm. Methodical. She knows this car, knows its moods, and she’s careful not to push too hard. But after hours in the cold, the engine is stubborn and uncooperative. With every attempt, it grows more reluctant, less willing. The moments of promise become shorter. The silence afterward heavier.

The last near-start comes and goes. After that, the tone shifts.

Her movements become firmer, more insistent. Jane’s left hand works the ch*ke with care, pushing and easing it while her stiletto boot presses the accelerator with growing urgency. She’s searching-feeling- trying to find that perfect balance. The engine responds just enough to keep her trying, threatening to catch, never quite giving in.

Through the windscreen, her frustration is impossible to miss. She bites her bottom lip, stares ahead, then briefly closes her eyes as the starter turns again. Her breath fogs the glass. From time to time, she murmurs softly to the car, asking it to start, not loudly, not dramatically, just quiet, intimate words meant only for the machine beneath her.

Minutes stretch on. Thirteen. Fourteen. She doesn’t give up easily.

But eventually, even patience has its limits. The engine refuses one final time, and Jane lets the key spring back. She sits there for a moment, composed but defeated, the tension slowly draining away.

With a small exhale, she opens the door, steps back out into the cold, and leaves the Fiesta behind, silent, stubborn as she walks away to seek help elsewhere.
