I ask you to take a seat, my voice calm, polished, perfectly rehearsed. I explain that the decision has already been made—your branch is being dissolved, effective immediately. I tell you how unfortunate it is, how l*ttle control I have over it, how much I’ll miss having you around. I even let a hint of warmth slip through when I c*ll you my favorite employee.

When you ask—quietly, desperately—if there’s any way to stay, I let the silence stretch. Then I lean in and tell you there is one alternative. A permanent position. Much smaller in scope, much more... personal. I suggest it as security, as loyalty rewarded. No more uncertainty. No more risk of being let go.

You agree before I’ve even finished explaining.

We shake on it.

That’s when the downsizing truly happens.

I watch you shrink with a satisfied smile, still speaking in the same gentle, professional tone as I remark on how cute and adorable you look now. I tell you not to be frightened—this just means you fit the role better. I lift you easily, already referring to you as my pet, explaining that you’re far too valuable to ever be redundant again.

But I also make something very clear.

This position comes with expectations. You exist to please, to behave, to perform exactly as I require. When you do well, I’ll be kind. When you don’t... well, corrective action is part of any permanent role. I assure you the punishment will be memorable enough to help you improve.

I place you safely away, like company property that’s finally been properly categorized, and take you home to begin orientation. There’s no confusion now. No ambiguity. No escape clauses.

After all, downsizing is effective immediately—and you’ve already been reassigned.
