Then, for a breath, her expression softens. Her hand comes down to your level and hovers, almost gentle. “Maybe we can be friends,” she murmurs, voice syrupy and impossible to trust. For a blink you believe her. Warmth flutters somewhere in your ribs.

The grin that breaks across her face is quick and devilish. “Oh — you actually bought that.” The softness snaps away like a broken wire. The amusement returns, sharper this time, and she revels in it.

She sits back, towers over you again, and the room shrinks to the sound of her breathing. You try to cry but the sound is small, swallowed by her laugh. You’ve never felt such humiliation from anyone — and because she used to be someone you loved, it cuts deeper than you ever imagined possible.

She toys with you the way a cat toys with a trapped mouse, and the thought becomes clear that whatever hope you carried is now something she holds simply to crush. Outside the window, the city goes on ignorant and enormous; inside, under her shadow, you understand just how l*ttle you matter to Remedy. And she isn’t done.
