Minutes stretched then compressed. She lost track of time, lost track of everything except the vital necessity of the next breath, and the struggle to not let the water close over her for good. Others gathered at the pool’s edge, drawn by the spectacle or the possibility of failure. Their voices were muffled and distant, mere tremors in the water. Neji closed her eyes, conjuring a memory of a thunderstorm at sea—how the ocean dared her, and she dared it back. The water couldn’t beat her. It was her element, or it would be today.

At last, as her energy ebbed and her head lolled beneath the surface, the ropes began to slip. The fibers, weakened by relentless twisting, loosened by the friction of her determined thrashing, surrendered an inch at a time. With a final, desperate arch, she twisted her hips and brought her knees up, scraping them against the pool wall. The knot slipped, and with new leverage, Neji wriggled free, her hands now in front of her, drawing herself with awkward breaststrokes toward the edge. She surfaced, gasping, triumphant, hair plastered to her forehead and raw lines of rope b*rn blooming red across her skin.

The challenge official checked her stopwatch, nodded with grudging approval, and clicked a button. The cameraman, grinning widely, gave her a double thumbs-up. She’d doubled the prior record, and more importantly, she’d wrung the experience for every thrill it had to offer.

When she finally pulled herself from the pool, her lungs ringing with every breath, she realized that every onlooker had left the perimeter. Only the camera, now off, and the official remained, recording her for the permanent, unwitnessed record.
